In our quest to continously improve and invest in the latest technologies, we have implemented Vocollect voice directed work in some of our locations to provide a more efficient way of handling certain business applications.

Voice directed work is composed of two elements: the text-to-speech software that turns computer data into audible commands, and speech recognition software that can interpret the user’s voice into usable data. The Hardware utilized consists of a lightweight headset with a microphone, and a wearable computer. Applications for voice systems include order picking, quality inspection, shipping, receiving, and cycle counting.

Voice directed work begins with the employee being given an assignment generated by the Tighe’s WMS. These assignments are sent via a radio frequency network from Tighe’s WMS to a lightweight, battery-powered, mobile computer worn by one of our warehouse associates.

Once the wearable computer receives the work assignments, they are converted into a series of computer-generated verbal commands that the associate hears through their headset. The instructions direct the employee to a specific location. Once there, the associate confirms that he’s there by speaking into the headset’s microphone. The associate then receives instructions, completes them, and verifies that the job had been done by speaking into the microphone. Recognized by the voice recognition software, the data is sent back to Tighe’s WMS. From there, the WMS issues the next appropriate command and the process repeats itself.

With voice directed work, employees stay focused on the job at hand. They’re not reading a screen, pick list, or purchase order; keying in data, or juggling both product and an input device.
